One Distinguishing Mark of Believers

Beth Jones

“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness…” Galatians 5:22

It was the best insult ever! A person who was new to our church was told by an acquaintance that she should not visit our church because, "They have too much fun at that church!" Well, she came anyway and after the service said, "I love being part of a church where CHURCH IS FUN!" (On top of that, she was thrilled that her kids loved church and when she quizzed her kids on the way home from church, they remembered everything they’d been taught that day. Score!)

Have to say, this was a first! We’ve heard church was too long, too boring, too big and too loud, but never too much fun! What was meant as an insult, turned out to be a great compliment.

Fun! What about it? The Bible talks a lot about joy, gladness, laughter, mirth and rejoicing––and all of these things end up looking a lot like: fun!

Joy is another way of describing it and joy is the fruit that should be seen in the life of a person (and a church) where the Holy Spirit is alive and well!

Joy is one of the major distinguishing marks of a Christian!

So, how is your joy quotient? Is your heart full of gladness? Do you rejoice easily? Does laughter come easily? Do you have fun? Or have you been serious and intense? Feeling blue? Down in the dumps? Frowning more than smiling? It doesn’t need to be that way.

You can choose joy today!

If you need to prime the joy pump, take a bath in these Scriptures from Psalms––by reading and meditating on them––and let the joy of the Lord fill your heart!

Psalm 16:11
You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.

Psalm 19:8
The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living.

Psalm 28:7
The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.

Psalm 32:1
Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight!

Psalm 32:2
Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty!

Psalm 34:8
Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!

Psalm 47:1
Come, everyone! Clap your hands! Shout to God with joyful praise!

Psalm 63:5
You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy.

Psalm 66:1
Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth!

Psalm 92:4
You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me! I sing for joy because of what you have done.

Psalm 112:1
Praise the Lord! How joyful are those who fear the Lord and delight in obeying his commands.

Psalm 128:1
How joyful are those who fear the Lord— all who follow his ways!

Psalm 144:15
Yes, joyful are those who live like this! Joyful indeed are those whose God is the Lord.

Choose joy. Rejoice on purpose. Have fun. Start smiling. Laugh out loud. Shout for joy!

Say It: “Father, I choose joy. (Go ahead, laugh, rejoice, smile, have fun and shout for joy!) In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

Note: To jumpstart the joy of the Lord in your life, I highly recommend you get my book, Up: Writing a New Chapter of Joy and Laughter, one of the Life Basics Bible Studies. It's time to have some fun!
