Be With Him

Jeff Jones

“And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons.” Mark 3:13-15, NKJV

Before we get started, let’s read the verse above one more time. Only this time read it slowly enough for these words to find a place deep within your soul. Here’s the situation — John the Baptist has baptized Jesus at the river Jordan and the Holy Spirit comes and rests upon Him. Jesus spends 40 days and nights in the wilderness fighting the Tempter. His earthly ministry is about to expand big time and He knows that He can’t do it alone. He goes up to a mountain. He prays all night, and then He calls for twelve of His followers–those He Himself wanted. They answered the call and they voluntarily come to Him. Now don’t miss the reason for this important moment in history. Jesus wanted them to “be with Him.” Just think about that for a minute. Before He sent them to preach. Before they ever received power to heal sicknesses and cast out demons He called them to “be with Him.

When was the last time we reflected on the idea that Jesus, the Son of God, just wants to be with us? I remember one of my sons asking me about this question. He said, “Dad, what kinds of things do you do to connect with God on a daily basis?” Of course, you know the standard answer, “read your Bible and pray.” But I told him that the number one thing I do every day is wake up with what I would call a God-consciousness. It’s the idea that Jesus is with us every step, of every day. He actually enjoys hanging out with us. Of course there are moments each day where connecting with Him is more purposeful. But I do try to always include Him in my thoughts and my actions throughout the day. Man, is that ever powerful because it’s how we connect our faith in Christ with our daily lives. It’s how we live a life that honors God. It reminds me of a great verse in Genesis 6:9 that describes the results of spending time with God: “This is the story of Noah: Noah was a good man, a man of integrity in his community. Noah walked with God.”

As Noah walked with God, he was shaped into a good man, a man filled with integrity and purpose. The picture of a walk with God like this is a powerful one. It’s the life that God wants for every one of us – a life filled with His presence and His power. But doesn’t it seem like some folks spend their time trying to connect to the power of God without realizing that there is no power without His presence. He’s the one with the power, we aren’t. His power in our lives is a result of His presence. So let’s focus on His presence, and His power will be there. Let’s practice being God-conscious today by making plans to be with Him.

Say It: “Father, today I want to draw close to You. When I’m reading my Bible, when I say my prayers and as I walk through my day. I’m choosing to be conscious of being with You throughout my day. I will walk by faith and not by sight and I will make plans to be with You all day today. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!”
