Walk On Your Waves

Eric Jones

“But Jesus spoke to them at once. "Don't be afraid," he said. "Take courage. I am here!" Matthew 14:27

There is something comforting about knowing that someone is on your side! Lately, the days seem to feel shorter and the to-do list seems to get longer - which is why the words in this passage are resonating with me so strongly. I am sure you can relate because we all have had seasons of life like this. Seasons where you lay your head on your pillow at night and you can’t even remember what happened that day because it all moved so quickly. Seasons where you realize it’s 4 o'clock in the afternoon and you haven’t had lunch yet.

It’s in these types of seasons that it’s easy to allow yourself to become overwhelmed by stress, wallow in your list of to do’s and have a pity-party for how busy you feel. It is easy to get a tainted attitude towards your work, your family and your friends. It’s easy to want to give in or retreat to isolation, but it’s also during these times that I have learned how important it is to stop, step back, and get a 30,000 ft. perspective of your life. It’s necessary to remember that no matter how much work needs to be done, like our text says today, Jesus is here.

The text from today is taken out of the middle of a story when the disciples were in one of the craziest storms of their life, literally. Their ship was caught in the middle of the sea, with waves crashing all around, and nobody had a way out. It wasn’t until they saw what appeared to be a ghost (spoiler alert: it was Jesus) walking in the middle of the ocean, ON THE WATER. Hello. This voice called out to them and told them not to be afraid, to take courage, because He is here. What an incredible moment this must of have been. While they were tossing about in great fear, the King of Heaven showed up...and did I mention He was walking on the water?

My encouragement to us today is simple and brief. “Take courage. Jesus is here.” No matter how much stress, anxiety, fear, pain, or confusion you may be feeling, be encouraged today that the same words Jesus spoke to the disciples some 2,000 years ago, He is speaking to us today. You may feel like waves are literally capsizing your marriage, your emotions, your job, your family, your thoughts, or your perspective, but just take a moment to stop, look out into the waves – no it’s not a ghost, it’s Jesus - and He is standing strong right in the midst of it all. He is here. When we focus on Jesus, the waves always seem a lot smaller. You can do it. You can push through, get the answer, get the promotion, see your kids turn around, and breakthrough emotional bondage. It’s possible. With God, all things are possible.

My favorite part about this story is not that Jesus walked on the water, or that he spoke an encouraging word, or even that the storm ceased. My favorite part is that even in the midst of the storm, Peter called out to Jesus and asked if he could join Him out on the water. And guess what...HE DID! Peter, a mere man, walked on the water with Jesus. He knew that no matter how big the waves were, that Jesus was bigger and if Jesus was with him, then he could stand on water too.

Today, I believe that Jesus doesn’t simply want to make all of our problems disappear, but He wants to teach us how to step out, face the storm head-on and do what seems impossible with His help. So today, let’s do it. Let’s trust the words of Jesus to carry us through no matter what storm we face. Let’s walk on our waves and keep our eyes on Jesus.

Say It: "Father, I thank You that You are with me. You are for me. And You are on my side. Today I choose to take my eyes off of the waves and put my eyes on You. I choose to take courage in You and be reminded that I am not alone. I want to walk on these waves with You. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
