You’re A Light Bearer

Alexa Jones

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.” Matthew 5:14-15

You’re a light bearer! You’ve been transferred from the dominion of darkness into God’s wonderful Kingdom of Light. God is light, in Him there is no darkness. He made you as His child to shine like a star in the universe as you hold out the word of life. He plans to use you to bring His light to the dark places of the world (Philippians 2:15). Matthew 5:14 mentions that you don’t light a lamp and put it under a bowl - it’s entire purpose is to give light to those around it. Today, let’s take off the bowl by overcoming 3 lies about our light.

1) My light isn’t bright enough to make a difference.
It’s easy to feel our light is insignificant compared to the darkness of this world, but light overpowers darkness every time! Even the smallest flicker of light changes the whole room. Your light matters - and Matthew 5:14 says that it cannot be hidden. As you’re a light bearer for Christ, each conversation with your co-worker, friend or family member about God is His light overcoming darkness.

2) I make too many mistakes to be a light.
1 Peter 2:9, “You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.”
Our light isn’t dependent on our actions or shortcomings - it’s a result of an amazing Savior who died for us, loves us and forgives us of all our sins. Our job is to show others HIS goodness, not our own.

3) My light might cause a scene.
Romans 1:16, “I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes.” People are drawn to light, so get ready to cause the best scene ever. As you shine your light with abandon and unashamedly love God and those around you, people in your life will come to know Christ.

Let’s not be bashful with this light that’s been so greatly given to us; no more putting it under a bowl! Pray for someone in public, share the gospel, smile at the mean co-worker, tell someone God loves them, be joyful even in the midst of a trial, encourage those around you. There’s a world that desperately needs Jesus and the light that you carry - so today make a choice to let it shine!

Say It: "Thank you Lord that you've made your home in my heart and live in me! Today, show me how to be a light in the world around me and share the good news of the gospel. Help me to love others, encourage people and shine brightly for your Kingdom. In Jesus' Name, Amen."
