Hidden Your Word

Meghan Hock

“Let your heart retain my words; Keep my commands, and live. Get wisdom! Get understanding!”
Proverbs 4:4-5

When it comes to living a successful Christian life, it’s less about the spectacular moments and more about the everyday, seemingly insignificant moments. In a world that is constantly looking for the next best thing, the latest innovation, or the freshest message -- it can be easy to translate that into your relationship with God. When things get same-old, seem boring or not as exciting, we think we have to look for the next best book, the most popular podcast, the latest and greatest revelation to keep our spark alive. But the reality is that the simple things are what give you staying power. It’s not flashy or spectacular - but the discipline of reading your Bible will keep you stable, full of strength and joy to finish your race.

For me personally, I’ve had seasons of amazing freshness and zeal where my relationship with God has felt so alive and so close. I’ve also had seasons of drought, where I felt like I was just going through the motions, holding on to the memories of what was, but feeling burnt out or dry.

The powerful truth is that putting God’s Word in front of you, no matter what season you are in, will keep you!

We are all prone to drift in life, and the thing about drifting is its subtle and slow. Before you know it you look up and you’re somewhere you never intended to be.

But God’s Word is our anchor. It keeps us steady in the place God intended for our life. It keeps us safe, secure and locked in to His plan.

It’s also a discipline. You have to pre-decide that you will stay in God’s Word no matter what season you’re in, what part of the bible you are reading, or whether you see the direct impact or not. Pre-decide that God’s Word will be your guide. Pre-decide that you will not be conformed to this world, but rather, transformed, by the renewing of your mind with the Word of God.

My simple encouragement today is this: read your Bible.

God has so much to say to us and the primary way He does it is through His revealed Word. You’ll never regret time spent in your Bible. You’ll never feel like you’ve missed out.

When you feel tempted to move beyond the basics and look for the next best thing, remind yourself that God could have communicated to us in any way He wanted to, but He chose the written word, and His Word is living and active and is able to speak to every single situation, question, or season.

Say It: “Father, I thank You for the promise that You do speak to me through Your Word, the Bible. I ask for Your help to align my life to Your Word, and I thank You that as I read it, Your Words will come alive to me and change me from the inside out. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
