“Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.” Matthew 11:29, The Message Bible
Have you ever sat next to someone at church who clapped a half beat off from everyone else? How did that make you feel? Didn’t you just want to grab both their hands and say, “here let me help you.” They may be clapping but because something is off just a bit, you find yourself completely distracted.
Today’s text is a pretty incredible promise from Jesus about living our lives with Him. Here is the whole promise:
"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."
I don’t know about you, but reading this promise of learning to walk with, work with and to watch Jesus looks like the kind of life that I want to live. So, here’s a question for you to consider. Are there some things about your life that are just a bit off? Just a half beat from being in sync and running smoothly. If so, it may be time to check in with Jesus and make sure that you aren’t doing anything that’s hindering you from living in the grace that He has planned for your life. You see, we’re all unique and we’ve been given unique platforms of grace from God to work from. Moms have unique graces that Dad’s don’t have. Nurses have unique graces that mechanics don’t have. That’s why it’s so important to know your purpose in life, to know your gifts, because when you know your purpose and the associated gifts, you can become familiar with the grace that you were built to operate in.
“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” 1 Peter 4:10
God doesn’t want your life to be burdened down or heavy--He wants your life to work! That’s why Jesus said He wanted us to, “learn the unforced rhythms of grace.” It reminds me of the picture of three kids playing with a jump rope. As two of them swing the rope, the third waits until they sense the rhythm, and then they jump in. It’s not hard, it’s not a lot of effort, they just join up with that unforced rhythm of the rope. That’s a picture of what our lives are supposed to look like as Christ followers. Aren’t you glad that we can, “learn to live freely and lightly” in Him? So find your rhythm, jump in and enjoy the ride.
Say It: “Father, I thank You for the manifold grace of God in my life. I want to walk with You, to work with You, watch You and to learn the unforced rhythms of grace. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!”
