A Creative Perspective

Beth Jones

"I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions." Proverbs 8:12, KJV

When things become too same-old same-old, too predictable or boring – it’s time to intentionally seek ways to be innovative, creative or try a new approach. Invent a new product. Put a twist on your service. Sing a new song. Mix it up. Rephrase it. Take a different route. Try a new style. Do something you’ve never done. Set the bar higher. Fulfill that lifelong dream. Attack the problem from another angle. Do something that is different than what other people are doing or expect.

Today, let’s talk about stepping out of boring, routine, same-old, ‘this is how we’ve always done it’ ways of thinking! Here’s a few resources and examples that have helped me be more creative and may help you too.

Read Stuff By Creative People: Whether you’re in business, self-employed, in ministry or just an artistic junkie – you can glean great ideas from creative people. I love reading about creative, innovative, visionary, out-of-the-box types of people. They stretch me. They make me think. They force me to step it up. They help me to lean into and put my trust in the Most Creative One!

On the secular side, Tom Peters is a legend as a creative marketing management genius. Some of my favorite books of his are: In Search of Excellence, The Pursuit of Wow! and Re-Imagine. A few recent books that have been incredibly popular for creatives include: The Rise of the Creative Class by Richard Florida, Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon and Creativity Inc. by Ed Catmull.

In the Christian world, Ed Young of Fellowship Church has written several books and Hillsong has a ton of great content that will definitely help you get your creative juices flowing!

Follow Innovators on Social Media: There are a plethora of people to follow on social media, but some of my favorite innovative people to follow are: @GuyKawasaki and @DanielPink. Their posts open up a world of interesting info and new ideas. One great website to check out is 99U.com; it’s all about empowering the creative community.

Glean from Really Smart People: If you want to enter the world of smart people, check out TED.com and watch a variety of “riveting talks by remarkable people, free to all the world.” Exposing yourself to things outside your realm of expertise will add a creative perspective to your life and might help you in areas of your own thinking.

Don’t Do What Everyone Else is Doing: It’s as simple as that. Just because everyone has done it a certain way doesn’t mean you have to! Who says you can’t do things differently?

Pray: This one goes without saying…but let me just say it. God is the Most Creative One and when we pray and wait on the Lord, the Holy Spirit will give us the most interesting, creative, innovative, fun, fruitful and faith-adventure-filled ideas! Listen, follow and then lead the way for creativity in your sphere of influence.

So, are you ready to enter a whole new vista in your life? Business? Family? Ministry? Church? Do it! Today, break that boring, routine, same-old, ‘this is how we’ve always done it’ way of life.

Say It: "Father, I will put these things into practice and I thank You for giving me the creative, innovative, Spirit-designed ideas I need to step out in this area of my life: ____________ (Then wait on the Lord and listen to His voice and follow His lead!) In Jesus' Name. Amen."
