The Most Generous Gift

Beth Jones

[I recently wrote a new book: Wealth & Generosity - Living in God’s Economy. Here's a short excerpt from the book to encourage you to put God’s Word on this subject into practice in your own life!]

“You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9 NLT

Do you know that the most generous act in all of time and eternity was when God spared not His own Son, but gave Him up for us all? The Father has already given us His most generous gift by sending His most valued and only begotten Son, Jesus Christ—why wouldn’t He generously give us all other things? After all, Romans 8:31-32 tells us, “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” (NKJV). Our response to His generosity is to freely receive all the things we need and then to freely give.

Let me just put it out there. We don’t give to get. We give because we’ve already gotten. When we give to God in response to the generosity He’s already shown us, it turns out that the Lord in His generosity enables us to get more! (Did you follow that?)

When it comes to giving, because of God’s generosity towards you, your automatic response should be to give! The Lord wants this to be our default. When you live to give, it causes you to listen to what people desire, and then one of your first thoughts is: How can I make that happen for them? You think about picking up the tab at lunch, buying coffees for the office, paying down someone’s mortgage, sending a family on an all-expenses paid vacation, funding things at your church, supporting missionaries, sponsoring children in underprivileged countries, and more.

Are you beginning to catch the spirit of wealth and generosity?

I know the definition for wealth and generosity may vary from person to person. For some, the definition of being blessed might be having the means to buy a Mercedes G class. For others, a blessed life is the ability to give away a Mercedes G class. For another, it’s both!

Financially, everyone everywhere starts somewhere. Whether you start with ten cents, ten dollars, or ten rupees, if you begin to cooperate with God’s principles for wealth and generosity, the only way you can go is up! The playing field is level in that respect. Granted, a Christian in America (where the GDP is around $53,000) is more likely to start with 200 dollars than a believer in Burundi (where the GDP is around $260) who might start with 98 cents. But either way, be encouraged that by applying God’s principles through faith and patience, the only way to go is up!

The bottom line is simple. If we want to go up in the areas of wealth and generosity, we will have to grow up in our understanding. If we want to experience abundant living, we simply have to embrace generous giving. We have to get the basics!

Say It: “Father, I thank you for the most generous gift of all - Your son Jesus. Help me to catch the spirit of generosity and grow in my understanding of Your plan for wealth. Help me to see opportunities to be generous to others and glorify You with all that I’m blessed with. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
