His Goodness

Eric Jones

“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.” Psalm 34:8

The Lord is good. Did you know that? I thought I did. I mean, I grew up in a house where this idea was engraved into my subconscious. I knew the Lord was good, preached the Lord was good, and even told the Lord that He was good, yet all the while my lips were saying one thing and my heart was living in a different place. I was taught from a young age, “good God; bad devil.” While I knew that this was true, I did not really get it until I came across the verse above, Psalm 34:8. For some reason, when I read this verse, it finally clicked with me. God is good, and not only that, but He wants for me to experience His goodness.

I think many Christians today are as confused as I was when it comes to God’s goodness. There have been teachings out there from every angle and today many people are living a life in bondage or in self-righteousness trying to do enough good to deserve or earn His goodness. The truth is God is a good God whether we are good or not. God wants us to experience His goodness in our everyday lives simply because He is good, not because we are. God is not standing in heaven waiting for you to make a mistake so He can shoot you down nor is He waiting for you to do enough “spiritual” things so that you can get His blessing. God is good, through and through, no matter what we do.

Today, I simply want to encourage and remind you of how good our God is and maybe help shift your perspective of the One we serve. Check out these verses in the book of Psalms alone that speak of God’s goodness.

Psalm 34:8-10
“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Oh fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him. The young lions lack and suffer; but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.”

Psalm 35:27
“Let the Lord be magnified, who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.”

Psalm 37:4
“Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.”

Psalm 56:9
“This I know, because God is for me.”

Psalm 65:11
“You crown the year with Your goodness, and Your paths drip with abundance.”

Psalm 68:19
“Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with benefits.”

I pray that these verses encourage, excite, and cause your heart to stir as much as mine. If any of these verses stuck out to you or any others you come across in the Bible, I would encourage you to write them down and any time the enemy tries to come in and convince you that God is not good you can remind Him of the Word. We serve a very good God and when we see this to its full extent it will change the way we live completely.

Say It: "Father, I thank you that you are good. You are just simply good. I thank you that you desire for me to have good things and to live a blessed life. I pray that you would continue to enlighten the eyes of my understanding to see your goodness to an even greater degree and that my life would be a reflection of your goodness. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
