A Good, Good Father

Beth Jones

"And I will be your Father, and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." 2 Corinthians 6:18, NLT

Everyone needs a dad. I think that's how the Lord has wired us; we all need the things a good father provides. Ever needed a father to throw his arm around you after a tough break to say, "It's going to be okay..." or needed your dad to call and say, "I am really proud of you..." after a big win? Thankfully, we have such a Father—our Heavenly Father.

If we were fortunate enough to have a great earthly father, we are blessed. To have a dad who loves us, cares about us, is interested in us, is proud of and approves of us, gives us wise counsel, surprises us with gifts, celebrates with us, gives us a big lap to sit on and a big shoulder to cry on—is a true gift. We know many people who have been blessed to have had this type of father. They have wonderful reference points for understanding and experiencing the love and care of their Heavenly Father.

If you have not experienced a good earthly father, you may long for such a dad. Perhaps your dad died when you were young, or was non-existent or negligent in your life. Maybe your dad was abusive or self-absorbed and, therefore, you have a hard time connecting the dots of God as a good, good Father.

In either event, you do have a loving Father God who wants to reveal more of Himself to you. Let's meditate on a few verses that describe a good father—in particular our Heavenly Father.

A Good Father Pours His Love On Us
"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" (1 John 3:1, NIV)

A Good Father Knows What His Kids Need
"…Your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask Him!" (Matt. 6:8, NLT)

A Good Father is a 'More Than Enough' Giver
"…How much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him." (Matt. 7:11, NLT)

A Good Father is Compassionate and Full of Mercy
"You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate." (Luke 6:36, NLT)

A Good Father Longs for His Kids
"So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long distance away, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him." (Luke 15:20, NLT)1 Joh

A Good Father is Comforting
"All praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the source of every mercy and the God who comforts us. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others." (2 Cor. 1:3-4, NLT)

A Good Father Gives Good Gifts to His Kids
"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." (James 1:17, NIV)

A Good Father Wants to Spend Time with His Kids
"We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete." (1 John 1:3-4, NIV)

A Good Father Tells His Kids He's Proud of Them
"And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with Him.'" (Matt. 3:17, NLT)

If you need to know the love of a father today, I encourage you talk to the Lord about these verses and ask Him to reveal Himself to you as your good, good Father in a greater way.

Say It: "Father, I want to know You and Your love in a fresh way. You are my Father and I am Your child. I know You are a good, 'more than enough' type of Father. I pray You reveal Yourself to me as my Father in a greater way. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
