Apples of Gold

Beth Jones

"A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver." Proverbs 25:11, NKJV

Apples of gold in settings of silver…isn't this a beautiful picture? It's elegant. Unique. Lovely. Desired.

The Bible says “a word fitly spoken” is like that. The right word at the right time does the right things. The Message Bible puts it this way, "The right word at the right time is like a custom-made piece of jewelry…." The right piece of jewelry has the ability to perfect the whole outfit. Words have the ability to perfect a person's whole life...or at least their day!

Think about times when you've been the recipient of a word fitly spoken. What did it do for your heart? Mind? Outlook? Has someone ever given you an encouraging word and you knew that it was a "hug" sent straight from the Lord?

A few years ago, out of the blue, I received a nice apple of gold that I’ll never forget. It was a Facebook message from a pastor's wife in the Carolinas. We were acquainted, but I didn’t know her well at the time. I opened it up right before I went into worship during a weekend service. She had no idea that on that particular day, at that particular time, those words were just the encouragement I needed. She must have sensed the Lord's prompting and she sent me this note titled: You are blessed by God and admired by me. The note simply said: "Dear Beth, as I look at Facebook I can see how hard you work for the Lord. You are a very special lady. God sees your heart and all of your hard work and HE will reward you!" Needless to say, I went into worship with a beautiful custom-made piece of jewelry in my heart. Actually, it so moved me that I entered into praise and worship with a big lump in my throat!

It was also a great reminder of what Proverbs 16:24 says, "Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones."

Think about the times you've been the dispenser of a word fitly spoken. Has the Lord put a word or phrase in your heart to share with someone? Have you been prompted to encourage someone lately? Today, don't be shy…just tell them! Write them! Send them a Facebook note. You'll be glad you did and they will definitely feel "hugged" by the Lord.

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.

Say It: "Father, thank You for the 'apples of gold' You have given to me over the years. Help me to also be a good dispenser of those 'apples of gold’ today and always. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
