The Ultimate Compliment

Brodie Hock

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” Revelation 4:8, NIV

Who doesn’t love a good compliment? What’s your favorite? Beautiful, smart, talented, ripped, wise, fun, creative, cool? Well, take your pick or come up with your own, but know that there is one that supersedes them all.

Sounds like a real churchy word. Well not quite, it’s more like a real Godly word. In fact, it is a word used throughout scripture to define God and those imitating Him. It started in Genesis 2 with creation and goes all the way to the end of Revelation. Holy is the ultimate compliment. It’s used in scripture nearly 400 times and it’s reason is to depict God. See holy can be defined as this, different than all other things, set (above) apart, or sacred. When we talk about God we can use a lot of complimentary words to describe Him. However, we use those same words to describe earthly things as well. But the thing I love about “holy” is it is signifying that there is none like Him.

One of my favorite passages of scripture is Revelation 4. John is taken in the Spirit into the throne room of Heaven and there he really sees some interesting things. He is there but he isn’t alone. The 24 elders are there on their thrones and the four living creatures are there as well. These angelic beings stay before the throne day and night worshipping at the feet of God. I find it fascinating that they praise Him without break or ceasing for eternity. They are so taken by the glory of God that they could praise Him with so many words and yet what is it they can say? “Holy!” They are crying out what it is that best describes and praises our God: “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty!”

See the reason God is completely holy and we are not is that He is completely different then we are. There is none of the world or sin in Him. He is holy. He is unlike anyone or anything and He merits this compliment.

I’ve made it a point to try to study this word and get at least a base understanding of it because I want to praise God and incorporate this into my worshipping of Him. I call Him holy when I set my attention solely on Him in worship. I know there is none like Him (Jeremiah 10:6) and he deserves this title. I realize where I stand, where He stands, and the great distance between the two and recognize He is worthy of this title and I will praise Him with it!

Holy and holiness may not be talked about a ton anymore, but it God’s will for us to pursue being holy. In fact, in 1 Thessalonians 4:3 it says “this is the will of God, your holiness.” He is desiring you to be the same. So today - really meditate on what "holy" means and how God, in His truest character, is exactly that - holy.

Say It: "Lord, there is none like You! You are holy! Different than everyone else and apart from anything else. You are deserving of the highest praise and that is what makes You holy. Thank You for your revelation on what holy means. I want to give You the ultimate compliment and declare that You are holy! In Jesus’ Name, Amen."
