Wood On A Fire

Beth Jones

"For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, contention ceases." Proverbs 26:20, AMP

Have you spent time around a big, blazing bonfire this summer? There's nothing like sitting around a campfire, roasting marshmallows and telling stories with family and great friends. When the fire starts to die down, we throw another log on top and the fire gets rejuvenated. At the end of the night, when it's time for bed—we simply quit putting logs on the fire and it goes out.

Let’s look at it from a different perspective. Gossip and strife can be just like a bonfire, while words and whispers are like the wood. A big, blazing bonfire of gossip can set a whole person, family, office, church, school or company on fire - and words can keep that fire going for a longggg time.

Have you ever noticed that we can get a whole group fired up with nothing more than our words? One person says this, another person whispers that and more and more logs are added to the fire. Ultimately, there's a raging fire in our midst, which means people will definitely get burnt.

Have you also noticed that we can stir ourselves up into an angry fire by talking? When we are frustrated or hurt, we can start venting our feelings and work ourselves up into a frenzy because we keep throwing logs onto the fire.

If we want strife, gossip, anger or contentious fires to go out around us—we have to quit putting new logs on them. As believers, we have a responsibility to guard our words. When we complain, gossip, criticize or share our negative opinions, thoughts, hurts or offenses with others, we are adding wood to a dangerous fire.

So, the next time you're tempted to stir up the fire within your own heart or among your family, friends or coworkers, just remember: "…where there is no wood, the fire goes out."

Say It: "Father, I am sorry for throwing logs onto gossip and strife bonfires by speaking words I shouldn't have spoken. Help me to remember and obey this simple truth: 'where there is no wood the fire goes out.' In Jesus' Name. Amen."
