Humility vs. Haughtiness

Beth Jones

"Haughtiness comes before disaster, but humility before honor." Proverbs 18:12, AMP

There is something so refreshing about being around people with a humble spirit - wouldn’t you agree? In the same way, there is something strained, tense and unsettling about being around those who are haughty.

You may already know the major differences between humility and haughtiness, but it never hurts us to review...

To be "haughty" is to be proud, arrogant, exalted, raised up in your own mind. It's the person who's closed-off and won't take the initiative to reach out to others, but rather, insists that others to reach out to them. It's the person who speaks in condescending or patronizing tones to others. It's the person who is ego-driven. The one who walks into the room with body language that exudes the, "Here I am!" persona. To be haughty is to be vain, aloof or exclusive.

To be "humble" is to be gentle, meek and respectful to others. It's the person who is open and willing to go low. It's the person who's not paying attention to the pecking order, but is eager to greet and interact with all kinds of people. It's the person who is  “others-driven.” The one who walks into a room with body language that exudes the, "There you are!" persona. To be humble is to put people first and to be courteous and respectful of others.

No doubt, we all know people in both categories; but the bigger question to ask ourselves honestly (and the Lord) today is: which one are we?

Remember..."God sets Himself against the proud and haughty, but gives grace [continually] to the lowly (those who are humble enough to receive it)." James 4:6, AMP

Say It: "Father, help me to not think more highly of myself than I ought. Haughtiness, pride, and ego is ugly. Help me to run in the opposite direction. I choose to humble myself before You and I ask You to help me have a humble spirit as I relate to others. In Jesus’ Name. Amen."
