Run, Servant, Run!

Beth Jones

"Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people…" Ephesians 6:7, NIV

Have you ever been impressed by valet guys? Yes, the valet guys...the ones who park the cars at hotels, fancy restaurants, medical centers and sporting events. I have!

A few years ago, I was in Tampa, Florida, with my mother and sisters. We were visiting a medical institution when I noticed something unusual about the valets who were parking cars.

Whenever a patient pulled up, the valet guys energetically greeted them, took their keys, drove the cars to the parking garage and ushered them to the doors. That part was nice, but it was what I saw leaving the hospital that really impressed me...

The first thing I noticed as we exited the building was that these valet guys (most of whom appeared to be college kids) were literally running to get every car! Once a patient emerged from the hospital and turned in their retrieval stub, the valet guys grabbed the keys and ran (fast!) to the parking garage to get the car. It was the ultimate picture of service!

The valet workers were happy, full of energy and apparently aware that many of these patients may not have received good news – so they were doing their small part to bring joy and relief. No need for a patient to wait one second longer than necessary for their vehicle. Once the car arrived to the valet stop, any valet guy who was not busy ran to open the doors for the patient and their families and give them a friendly send-off.

It was a simple thing – running to serve others. But, years later, that image is still burned in my mind. I am still pondering ways we can do a better job of that in our own lives and in our church as we serve the Lord and His people.

So today, why not look for ways to run as you serve God and others!

Say It: “Father, help me serve You and others wholeheartedly today. Give me insight and creative ways to run to serve! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
