Loving The Unlovable

Meghan Hock

“...for God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us.” Romans 5:5

The greatest love story ever told is the one penned throughout the Bible. The story of a perfect Man saving an imperfect people. Scripture after scripture in the Bible reminds us of the great importance of this four letter word, l-o-v-e.

In the book of Matthew, we learn that the greatest commandment is to LOVE the Lord our God with all our heart and with all our soul, and to LOVE our neighbor as ourselves. In 1 Corinthians we learn that if we speak in other tongues, have faith to move mountains, give gifts to the poor, offer our bodies as a martyr but have not LOVE, it profits us nothing. And in Luke we learn we’re to LOVE our enemies and do good to them… because our Heavenly Father is kind even to the unthankful and the evil.

The bar is set pretty high on love–which is why we were never made to do it alone. Romans 5:5 tells us “...for God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us.”

The moment we made Jesus our Lord, was the moment the Holy Spirit came to dwell within us - and when He came, he brought the love of God with Him. We never have to do it alone now! The ability to love ourselves, love others and love our enemies is possible because we have a Helper - the Holy Spirit.

It’s there, so we have to activate and tap into it! I’ve found the best way to activate love is to practice it on those who are ‘hard to love.’

How do you know if someone is “hard to love?” If when you see them, something unpleasant stirs up on the inside. If when they talk, you bubble up with annoyance or anger. If when they have success, it bothers you. If you find yourself having to ‘fake it’ around them. If you’re in a hurry to get somewhere and they are taking forever to bag your groceries (been there?). These are key signs that your “love walk” is being tested.

So, what do you do? Thank the Lord that His love IS already poured out in your heart, and ASK Him to help you demonstrate it. It could be that He wants you to forgive them and start praying for them, or complimenting them, or celebrating them. Or it could be that instead of being impatient, He wants you to smile kindly and ask how their day is going. Whatever it may be, you’re not alone in it! You can love those who are ‘hard to love’ when you realize the issue isn’t them, it’s YOU. You have a choice to love and the empowerment from the Holy Spirit to actually do it!

God’s love has been shed abroad in your heart by the Holy Spirit who lives in you, so tap into that love today and love those who are hard to love. Remember, God is kind to the unthankful and the evil… and if that’s the way He loves, that’s the way we ought to love.

Say It: "Father, I thank You that your Word tells me You poured out Your love in my heart through the Holy Spirit. So today, I on purpose tap into that love. Help me to overflow in true love today, and give me an opportunity to love those that are ‘hard to love.’ I know that people will see I’m a disciple of Yours by the way I love - so give me an opportunity to be that light today. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
