Because We Don't Know Everything

Beth Jones

"Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." Proverbs 15:22, NIV

There is wisdom in the multitude of godly counselors. God knew that one person couldn't possibly know everything – so He gave us one another.

The Lord has gifted people with different talents, bits of wisdom, reference points and experiences; taking time to learn, glean and tap into the insight and wisdom of others is just a smart thing to do. It takes humility and an appreciation for the gifts and anointing on others to do so. Not only that...it's more fun and fruitful to talk to and work with a variety of people or teams of people to accomplish various plans. Just one or two people aren't smart enough to do or know it all; God did not intend it to be that way.

We are thankful that the Lord has put some pretty wonderful people in our path – professionally and personally. Our church board inspects, advises and gives us their counsel for the overall health of the church on an annual basis. Our staff, and the various teams within, give us fresh, godly advice at various levels. Each week we glean a wealth of wisdom from our executive team to the pastoral staff to the creative team and others – each advisor brings unique pieces of counsel. What a huge blessing it is to obtain counsel! We've also seen the benefits of short-term advisory teams, for specific purposes. These teams have helped us think through the details of a number of projects over the years.

In our personal and family life, the Lord has surrounded us with insightful and intuitive friends, peers, consultants and comrades. Our chance of success in life and ministry has been greatly improved by listening to godly counsel.

What about you? Who has the Lord put in your life? What smart, godly, anointed, wise and insightful people has God added to your life? A parent? A pastor or mentor? A wise grandfather? Neighbor? Co-laborer? Consultant? Friend? Be encouraged – you don't have to figure out everything by yourself! No doubt, God has put trusted friends, confidants, comrades and counselors in your sphere – take time to seek out their counsel. Think about ways to tap into the experience and wisdom of those in your sphere. Maybe it's time to take someone out for coffee to pick their brain? Perhaps it's time to initiate a few catalytic or creative teams to take your organization to the next level.

The Lord wants you to succeed and, through godly counsel, you can!

Say This: "Father, thank You for the people You have put in my life. Help to discern the best ways to obtain the godly counsel and advice I need as I move forward with various plans. I pray You fill me with Your wisdom so that I can be a good advisor and counselor for others too. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
