Get Fit!

Beth Jones

"Spend your time and energy in training yourself for spiritual fitness. Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next." 1 Timothy 4:7-9, NLT

Ever looked at a fitness magazine and then ate a candy bar? Bought a treadmill or weight set and then used it to dry your laundry?

The older I get, the more impressed I am by people who are physically fit! It requires great discipline to run marathons, ski the giant slalom or perform other amazing athletic feats.

However, I am MOST impressed with people who discipline their lives to be spiritually fit! Champions don't develop overnight. It takes incredible commitment, sacrifice and discipline to excel at sports; it's the same for those who want to be world-class, Christian champions. How hard are you willing to work to get that godly six-pack? Ready to commit, sacrifice and discipline yourself in order to get ripped – spiritually?
I encourage you to take some time this weekend to put together your spiritual fitness plan for 2017! How many reps (or minutes) can you do in prayer? How disciplined are you with consistently reading the Bible? Can you “up your game” when it comes to worshipping the Lord? Have you committed to serving in your local church yet? When is the last time you told an unsaved friend or coworker about the Lord?

When you start to grow weary in well-doing, stir yourself up and push through the pain! Let the weak say, "I am strong. I will not be defeated. I will not quit!"

Being a Christian means putting in some effort! But, aren't you glad the Lord's not a harsh, drill sergeant? While He's patient, merciful and full of grace, He's also in the business of raising up spiritual champions! So, stay with it! It won't be long and your commitment, sacrifice and discipline will be revealed in one fit Christian – ready for the Master's use!

Say This: "Father, in this new year, help me to become spiritually strong, fit, alert and ready for Your use! In Jesus' Name. Amen."
