You Might Bump Into These Two

Jennifer Cole

“Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them..." John 21:20-21, NIV

Who’s sitting at your table these days? Who are you hanging out with - who are your followers? It’s important for us to realize that just because someone calls him or herself a friend or follower doesn't always mean they are. Judas called himself a follower back in the day and so did John. There was a big difference between the two!

John was referred to as “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” John was a true blue, loyal friend to the core. He was Jesus' dear friend and disciple and the one entrusted with caring for Jesus’ mother after Jesus died and rose to Heaven. Loyal friends like "John" are such a gift and what a gem when you have one!

But, Judas was there too - he pretended to be a disciple of Jesus but never truly was in his heart. He probably wore the right holy garb, looked really religious, knew how to perform and play a role and talked a lot about helping the poor. But as it turned out, he talked behind Jesus' back and was a thief skimming out of the money bag. And in the moment when Jesus needed him most, Judas showed his true colors and betrayed Jesus into the hands of thugs.

So how do you know who’s at your table - a “John” or a “Judas?” Jesus said we'd know people by their fruit. Who’s had your back, even when the going got tough?  Who’s been a faithful friend, trustworthy, and prays for you? Who’s consistently shown that they’re unwilling to sell their integrity? Such people are likely enjoying a life full of supernatural joy and hope, and you’ll see that fruit! Today, let’s thank God for the “Johns” in our lives!

Say This: “Father, I thank You for __________ (mention by name(s) the 'Johns' in your life) - thank You that they’ve been true blue friends, filled with integrity and surrounded by the evidence of spiritual fruit in their lives. Father, I also ask for Your wisdom and discernment to identify if there’s any 'Judas' in my life. Help me, Lord, to be a 'John' kind of friend to others! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
