Survive the Sift!

Jennifer Cole

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand." Ephesians 6:10-13, NKJV

Accomplishments can make us feel like we are flying high with a full force wind in our sails. Maybe we’ve recently graduated from college or a trade school. Maybe we’ve just received a long-awaited promotion at work, or gotten accolades from a speech we gave or book we wrote. This can be an exciting time...however, one thing I wish everyone knew is this -- right at those points where we’re feeling great about our accomplishments and stepping forward on our path -- that’s precisely where the devil wants to shut us down before we can move forward and gain any sort of momentum. To do so, he prepares a “sifting.”

“To be sifted,” by definition, is to shake in a sieve. According to Thayer’s Lexicon, to sift is the idea of an inward agitation to try one’s faith to the verge of overthrow. The devil wants to sift our faith to the point of overthrow. He will work to agitate us internally until we are discouraged, tired, frustrated, mad, offended or worn out and he wins.

In particular, two areas where the enemy may try to sift you out are through getting you to live for the praise of men rather than God, and getting you exalted in pride rather than staying humble and acknowledging that God is the true source of all of your accomplishments and abilities. We need to be wise to his devices and prepare to stand strong through any battle we face!

So today, my encouragement to you is after all major accomplishments -- in fact, this would be good every day! -- don’t get offended, don’t be weary, don’t quit, give God the credit, stay strong, stay full of faith, stay prayed up and having done all -- stand!

Say This: "Father, thank You for the wisdom I need as I celebrate an accomplishment or milestone in my life. Help me to live for Your praise alone. Help me to stay small in my own eyes. I will recognize the tactics of the enemy and not let sifting take me off course. I will be strong in the Lord and the power of Your might! In Jesus' Name. Amen."
