Calling All Nobodies!

Jennifer Cole

“Take a good look, friends, at who you were when you got called into this life. I don't see many of ‘the brightest and the best’ among you, not many influential, not many from high-society families. Isn't it obvious that God deliberately chose men and women that the culture overlooks and exploits and abuses, chose these ‘nobodies’ to expose the hollow pretensions of the ‘somebodies’?” 1 Corinthians 1:26-30, The Message

I love how God uses normal, everyday people to do supernatural, world-changing things! Jesus seems to delight in finding, calling and using “average” people to do great things.

Ever noticed that God’s view of people is much different than the world’s? The world looks at the “somebodies” and gives them preferential treatment, excuses their faults, overlooks their character flaws and “oohs and aahs” over their greatness. The world is most impressed with the “brightest and best” and dismissive of the average and ordinary. The world overlooks, exploits and abuses those who appear to be “nobodies!”

But -- the Lord has another view. He deliberately chooses men and women in the culture that others have dismissed. Those who are broken, captive, poor and oppressed seem to be at the top of His list. Jesus didn’t call the high and mighty when He was on earth. He chose fisherman and tax collectors, not seminary grads and doctors of Jewish law.

These so-called “ordinary” people preached, prayed and ministered to people with His supernatural power -- not because they were “somebodies” -- but because they had been transformed, changed and rearranged by Jesus. As a result, God got the glory and all the credit for all that was accomplished in and through their lives.

This is a great encouragement for all of us! Maybe you’ve felt like a “nobody” or invisible in the world’s view. If you will commit yourself to Jesus and spend time with Him -- read and study His Word, pray from your heart of hearts, and fix your attention on Him -- He will transform you from the inside out. He will make you a “somebody” in His sight and He will use you to make a difference in your world.

Say This: “Father, I am so glad that You choose ‘nobodies’ and You turn us into ‘somebodies.’ Today, I make a decision to spend time with Jesus -- to give myself entirely to You and Your Word. Thank You for using my life for Your glory. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
