The Actual Truth

Beth Jones

"And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free." John 8:32, AMPC

Today, I want to encourage and challenge you as we’re in the middle of what appears to be a "truth crisis" in our culture. These days, people have a hard time knowing what the truth is and an even more difficult time embracing it. Why?

When we accept and embrace the truth, we may have to change. And as a rule—because of human nature, ego, pride and selfishness—our natural reaction is to resist change. So instead, we end up creating our own version of truth, so that we can continue to operate in our own self-indulgent ways. There is just one problem. That doesn't work!

The reason it doesn't work is because it's the truth that sets us free. It's not "our version" of the truth that sets us free—it's the actual truth that sets us free! If this relativistic truth was the answer—then those fighting for that “truth” should be free as a bird, full of joy and peace, right? Statistics, the media and just general observation will tell you that we live in a world where people are not free as a bird and are definitely not experiencing joy and peace. Instead people are living in fear, depression, anxiety, despair - the list goes on and on.

When we reject the real truth or when we invent our own truth—we remain stuck in these unhappy places! Just look around at those who claim to have discovered their own truth. Are they free? If you're reading the same headlines I'm reading, we see a culture where people are bound by depression and dependent on anti-anxiety medicine or other coping drugs. People are bound by alcohol, sex, celebrity and adrenaline addictions they think will fill the giant void in their hearts. People are bound by anger, resentment and bitterness...and they can't figure out why. Not exactly the best picture of freedom.

But take heart - Jesus told us the answer! He told us what the truth was. He made it absolutely clear when He said these two things:

1. "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'" John 14:6, NKJV

2. "Thy word is truth." John 17:17, NKJV

Jesus is the truth. God's Word is truth. It's simple. When we embrace Jesus, we find freedom. When we embrace God's Word—we find freedom. Notice, Jesus never said He was a truth, He said He was the truth. He didn't say God's Word was one of many truths, He said God's Word was truth. There is no mistaking His claims concerning the truth; He established absolute truth for us.

So, have you found Jesus to be the truth? Have you read His Word as truth? I encourage you to do so. And, here's the bonus—Jesus promised to give us a truth-guide, the Holy Spirit, who would guide us into all truth, when we trusted Him to do so. Here's what he said, "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth…" John 16:13, NKJV.

Eliminate the "truth crisis" in your life today by embracing Jesus and His Word. When you know the truth, it will set you free!

Say This: “Father, I am so glad that my search for the truth leads me to Jesus and Your Word! I believe it—and I know it: Jesus is the truth. He is my truth. Your Word is truth—my truth. I choose to embrace the absolute truth of Jesus and Your Word and I thank You for helping me to make any necessary changes in my thinking, philosophies, views, opinions, stances, positions and behavior in order to be congruent with the truth of Your Word. Lord, I don't want to be guilty of being biblically illiterate. I commit to reading and studying Your Word of truth and I ask You, Holy Spirit, to be my teacher and my truth-guide. In Jesus' Name. Amen.”
