The Love Test

Beth Jones

Up for a challenge today? Let’s take the “Love Test” together! I know, I know...love can sound like a soft thing, but don’t delete this email yet - it’s actually the ultimate challenge. Jesus has called us to live a life of love, so how are you doing? Let’s find out!

Here’s how the “test” works. Read 1 Corinthians 13 out loud and put your name in place every time you see the word “love.” For example, the "Love Test" for me would sound like this, "Beth endures long and is patient and kind. Beth is never envious…."

Yikes - even writing those two lines makes me want to up my love game. But, do you get the idea? Okay, it’s your turn. Go ahead and put your name in every place you see the bold word "love."

Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily. It (love) is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God's love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it (love) is not self-seeking; it (love) is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it (love) takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong]. It (love) does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail. Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, it's (love's) hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it (love) endures everything [without weakening]. Love never fails [never fades out or becomes obsolete or comes to an end].

So how did you do? Regardless of the grade you would give yourself today, there is good news! Every day you can choose to do better and love more with the Lord’s help! Jesus is our ultimate example of living a life a love - so why not ask for a little extra help in following Him?

Say This: “Father, I need Your help! I ask You to forgive me for my failure to walk in this God-kind of love and I ask for Your continued grace so that I can love others according to 1 Corinthians 13. I pray I may endure long and be patient and kind; I pray that I am never envious nor boiling over with jealousy, am not boastful or vainglorious, do not display myself haughtily. I pray that I am not conceited; am not rude and do not act unbecomingly. I pray that Your love in me will flow so that I do not insist on my own rights or my own way, that I am not self-seeking, not touchy or fretful or resentful, that I take no account of the evil done to me and that I pay no attention to a suffered wrong. I pray for Your help, so that I do not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but I rejoice when right and truth prevail. I pray that Your love in me is strong so that I can bear up under anything and everything that comes, and that I am ever ready to believe the best of every person. I pray Your love in me causes my hopes to be fadeless under all circumstances, so that I endure everything. I know that Your love never fails. In Jesus' Name. Amen.”
