Called To Help

Beth Jones

"And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues." 1 Corinthians 12:28, KJV

Take a closer look at 1 Corinthians 12:28 above —do you see that little word "helps" tucked in there? God calls some people to a ministry known as: helps! The word "helps" literally means to provide "relief." This is one of the most important and yet overlooked roles in the Church.

Perhaps you know someone (or maybe you are this someone?) who loves the Lord and has a passion to do something for God—but knows they are not gifted or called to lead, teach or preach. They just have a huge heart to "help" in getting the gospel to as many people as possible. They want to do what they can to relieve those called to lead the church by taking up the slack in an area. These people are likely called to the ministry of helps!

The helps ministry is huge! Those who are called and gifted to help are a great source of power and strength in a local church. When those called to help take their place—things get done. If you think about it—most areas of ministry fall under the "helps" category. Those with skills and talents in areas like—prayer, worship, IT, web design, audio, video, lighting, tech, computers, finances, administration, reception, food service, construction, cleaning, maintenance, ushers, greeters, traffic, hospitality, teaching kids, hosting small groups and providing spiritual guidance and care are called to the ministry of helps.

Never underestimate or ill-esteem the power of the ministry of helps! The ministry of helps supports those called to serve as leaders in the Body of Christ and literally provides relief to those in the five-fold ministry—apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers and evangelists. We have always appreciated those who have helped us over the years as we pastored Valley Family Church. Truly the Lord has blessed us with some amazing servant-hearted people and eternity will tell what their help has meant!

If you are called to helps ministry, you are a major blessing—don't ever forget it! May the Lord put a fresh wind in your sails so you are empowered to do all He's called you to do. Keep keeping on as you help your pastor and church leaders fulfill the vision God has assigned them!

Say This: "Father, I thank You for those you have called to the important ministry of 'helps.' I pray you encourage, strengthen, empower, reward and bless every person who has been faithful to serve You, to support their leaders and who have 'helped' get Kingdom business done. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
