Rest and Peace

Beth Jones

“...For we who have believed do enter into rest.” Hebrews 4:1

Okay, so how does this Christian life of living in rest and peace work, anyway? Why are so many Christians discouraged, disappointed, frustrated, feeling like hypocrites, and not experiencing the life that Jesus came to bring us?

It’s no secret that we maintain a busy pace in our culture. Just think about what it takes to keep up with technology alone. How many buttons do you have to push to turn the TV on and how many TV channels are there? How about cell phone apps and accessories? How many email addresses do you manage? There’s a lot going on! So many people live lives with no margin emotionally, no margin mentally, no margin financially, and no margin in relationships or time.

But you can be encouraged today! This thing called rest does exist, and the Bible tells us that those who believe enter into it. Hebrews 4:1 says, “Therefore, since a promise remains of entering his rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed, the Gospel was preached to us as well as to them, but the word which they heard did not profit them not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed do enter into rest.

In Matthew 11:28, Jesus said, "Come to me all who are weary, and the heavy laden, burdened down, tired, come to me and I'll give you rest. My burden is easy. My yoke is light. Learn from me."

Sometimes we’re looking for a formula – the magic bullet, the secret sauce or the “To Do” list. Jesus IS the secret sauce. And He made it so simple by saying, "Just come to me." We're too busy thinking, “Do, do, do…what do I have to DO to achieve rest and peace in my life?" Jesus said, “Just come to me. It's been done."

Today, take a deep breath – a deep sigh of relief – and know that all you have to do is spend time with Jesus and keep your eyes on Him to live the life God intended for you to live – a life of rest and a life of peace.

Say this: “Father, thank You that it’s been done through Jesus – I don’t have to strive, toil or strain. Thank You for Your Word, Your truth and Your wisdom. Thank You for divine revelation and grace deposits, and for showing me how to get a grip on how things work in Your Kingdom. In Jesus' Name, Amen.”
