You Have An Advantage!

Beth Jones

“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.” John 16:7

The Holy Spirit was sent for our advantage! When we follow Him, life is good. When we don’t, it gets messy. But how do we practically follow Him in our everyday lives?

One illustration that helped me in this area was to think about the Holy Spirit in terms of ballroom dancing. Several years ago, my husband Jeff and I took a ballroom dancing class just for fun. (Picture two leggy flamingos trying not to trip over each other and you’ll get the idea.)

One of the first things we learned in the class was that it was my job to follow Jeff’s lead...which was no easy task. In fact, I kept looking at our feet and “taking over” anytime I felt unsteady or unsure. My struggle to follow his lead must have been obvious to our instructor because he ordered me, “Follow the hand!” What? Then more gently he explained, “Jeff’s job is to lead you with his hand and you are to follow wherever his hand directs you to go.” And, of course, he was right!

When I focused on following Jeff’s hand – instead of our feet – he led, spun and moved me around that dance floor like we’d just won Dancing with the Stars! By simply placing my focus on the hand, we could change directions, twirl, dip and spin all while remaining together in perfect alignment.

This is a beautiful parallel of how we should be flowing with the Holy Spirit. If we will focus less on trying to be the leader of our own lives and focus more on following the leading of “His hand,” we will find the flow of the Spirit and truly live a Spirit-empowered life.

I love what Jesus says in John 16:12-13 in The Message translation, “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t handle them now. But when the Friend comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is.”

Today, “follow the hand” of the Lord and see where the Holy Spirit might lead you!
