Do It Diligently

Beth Jones

"…if it is to lead, do it diligently…." Romans 12:8, NIV

I distinctly remember a time in my life when I was reluctant to lead. I spent many years “throwing gutter balls” on purpose so that I would not be perceived as a leader. Then one day the Lord spoke to my heart quite clearly and bluntly. He said, “I have called you to be a leader. So, deal with it.” It might sound a bit strong, but that’s exactly what I needed to step up and be the leader God had called me to be – without apology or second-guessing myself.

Once I embraced what God had called me to be and do – God's divine grace kicked into gear and enabled me to see, think, create and strategize according to what He had called me to do.

What about you? Are you a leader? In many ways, every Christian is called to be a leader and influence others for Christ; while at the same time, God does uniquely call and equip specific individuals to stand in divinely appointed leadership roles. Has God called you to be a leader?

If so, He wants leaders to lead with diligence! Take another look at today’s Scripture in Romans 12. This passage describes some of the gifts the Lord gives to His children. Regarding those God-given gifts, the Lord tells us that if our gift is to lead, then we are to lead with diligence. Don't be reluctant – be diligent! To be diligent means to give careful and persistent work or effort. It is also synonymous with the idea of tenacity, rigor, dedication, commitment, meticulousness and more.

If you are called to be a leader – be diligent to sharpen your axe and increase your leadership knowledge, skills and abilities. Of course, Jesus was the best leader of all. Study Him and learn His ways and methods. Study other great leaders. Read books by proven Christian leaders. Ask questions. Learn. Do.

Just as the Lord spoke to me that one day, perhaps He is speaking to you today, “I’ve called you to be a leader. So, deal with it.” God didn’t make a mistake when He called you to lead. You can do it! Go ahead and lead with all diligence!

Say This: “Father, I accept Your call to be a leader. Help me to be effective as I lead with diligence with Jesus as my perfect example. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
