God Trains His Kids

Beth Jones

"No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening — it is painful! But afterward there will be a quiet harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way." Hebrews 12:11, NLT

No one likes to be corrected or disciplined – it's no fun at all! However, every wise person knows that it is necessary and important if we are ever going to reach our greatest God-given potential.

The writer of Hebrews had a lot to say about what and why God corrects us. Literally, the idea is one of training – not punishment. God trains us because He loves us! In fact, if God didn't correct us, it would be indicative that we were not His children. Like a good father, God trains His kids -- and the primary way He trains us is with His Word.

Think about this as it relates to your own kids. Whenever we correct our kids it's for their benefit, right? We train them so they are safe and successful; we correct them as needed so they learn how to behave, drive safely, treat people well, manage money and become successful in their God-given potential. The same is true of our Heavenly Father!

So, the question today is: how do you handle it? Do you receive God’s training with an attitude of humility or do you resist it with all you’ve got? If you've taken the wrong route, you can course correct today! Ask the Lord to help you. Make heart adjustments. God is merciful and He’s always “training us up in the way we should go” for OUR benefit!

Say This: “Father, I thank You for loving me enough to correct me. I know You are training me because I am Your child and You have my best interests in mind. Today, I choose to respond with a humble, teachable heart. I trust You to direct my future for Your best plan. In Jesus' Name. Amen.”
