"For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ." 2 Corinthians 5:21, NLT
It’s safe to say, we’ve all blown it. We’ve all sinned. Whether it’s a little white lie, a blatant revolt against all God stands for or the weakness of our own human flesh––we have all sinned––time and time again. In the New Testament, the idea of sin was conveyed through an archery term that meant: “missing the mark”–– missing the perfect bulls-eye. The truth is, we all have a sin nature that misses the mark of God’s perfection and we can’t help but sin!
So, what does that mean for us?
It means that our sin hurts us more than we realize. Sin kills us. Our sin requires a payment. “The wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23) The only thing that can pay for our sin is death. Someone has to pay the wage sin demands––the penalty for sin by dying––and it’s either going to be us or a substitute who would take our place...
Thankfully, for those who receive Him, Jesus is that substitute! He never sinned, but He willingly gave His life as an offering for our sin. There’s an old chorus that paints the picture for us,
“He paid a debt He did not owe;
I owed a debt I could not pay;
I needed someone to wash my sins away.
And, now, I sing a brand new song,
Christ Jesus paid a debt that I could never pay.”
Author: Ellis J. Crum, “He Paid a Debt He Did Not Owe”
Today, remember this. When Jesus died on the Cross and paid our debt, God forgave us of every sin. And that’s not all, He gave us right standing with Him! He made us as righteous as He is––because of Jesus. In God’s eyes, He sees us as if we have NEVER sinned! That’s why the gospel is called “good news!”
Say This: “Father, I thank You for sending Jesus––the One who never sinned––to be an offering for my sin so I could be forgiven and have right standing with You as if I had never sinned. Thank You Jesus! Amen.”
