don't get stuck on doubtville

Tara Farrell

On our faith adventure, we’re taking the exciting journey to the land of God’s thumbprint! It’s important to note that the land of God’s thumbprint isn’t a physical place or just a one-time destination -- rather, it’s a description of what we want our life to be like. It’s living a faith life that distinguishes each of us in such a way that people notice that God’s thumbprint is all over our life!

The first two places we’ve visited in the TV episodes thus far are Prayerville and Promiseville. You definitely want to spend a fair amount of time in those twin’ll be so glad you did as you continue on in your faith adventure! But after those twin cities, the next place we often come to is Doubtville. The enemy tries to lure us into that city but we want to avoid it altogether...or if we do get pulled in -- then we need to “remind and revisit” the things God has spoken to us in prayer and through His Word in order to escape from Doubtville. Let’s look at why we don’t want to hang out in Doubtville.

To know why we don’t want to camp out in Doubtville, we need to start by looking at the basics of how God feels about doubt. When we see doubt from His vantage point, we’ll understand why it’s not a desirable thing for our lives! Let me share a story about the first time I really got a glimpse of God’s stance on doubt.

When I was a new Christian, I was doubting some I decided to look up “doubt” in my topical Bible to find verses about it. I thought I’d find comfort from the Lord about my doubt...expecting to find something like, “It’s okay. I get it. Go ahead and doubt, My child.” But did you know, I didn’t find even ONE verse like that!

The verses about “doubt” all showed that it was not something God liked or that He wanted for us to dwell on in our faith adventure. Verses like “You of little faith, why did you doubt? (Matthew 14:31)” are what I found. And that makes sense...after all, God always fulfills His promises. So, can you see why God wouldn’t want doubt to be part of the lifestyle for believers? He wants us to stand in faith, believing His promises...because He is faithful to fulfill them.

>>This was a lightbulb moment for me -- it’s the moment I first realized that God isn’t into DOUBT...He’s into FAITH!

The opposite of doubt is to not wallow in doubt, then we need to increase our faith! Each of us can ask God to increase our faith -- but know that there’s no magic wand to just instantly fill us with more faith. Rather, we’ll start to hunger more and more for His Word. Why? We know that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17), so He answers that prayer by stirring up our desire for the Word -- knowing that as we study the Word and spend time with the Lord, our faith will grow.

God is all about the faith adventure, and He wants us to avoid getting lured into Doubtville -- that city is a distraction and derailer! But, how do we steer clear? The key is found in these two words: REMIND and REVISIT.

As you journey along in your faith adventure, doubts will come. Doubts will try to sabotage your faith adventure, get you “stuck,” steal your joy, get you sidetracked and off course. What’s the best thing to do when doubts come your way? REMIND yourself of what God spoke to you in Prayerville...and REVISIT the promises He gave you in Promiseville. After all, the only path out of and around Doubtville is through faith in God’s Word.

It’s a fact of life that we’ll all encounter doubts along the way. You can’t prevent that from happening, but you can be armed to recognize it and know what to do about it. Choose to not camp out in Doubtville! Remind yourself of what you know to be true and get your car back on the faith highway towards the land of God’s thumbprint!

Say This: “Father, thank You for the blessed and abundant faith life You have in store for Me. I ask You for wisdom as I navigate around Doubtville. Help me to ‘remind and revisit’ Your truth and Your promises and to stand in faith on what You’ve said. I don’t want doubt to derail my journey, so I choose faith instead. Thank You for helping me every step of the way. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
