how to know you have eternal life

Tara Farrell

When you think about eternity -- or eternal life -- did you know the Bible describes it from two perspectives? The quantitative dimension of eternal life -- a sense of timelessness where we live forever with God in a place called well as the qualitativedimension of eternal life -- where we live the “God-kind-of-life.” This is the kind-of-life where love, peace, joy, blessings and God’s goodness show up in our hearts and lives now, while we are here on Earth.

It’s sad to see the enemy ripping so many people off from both of these aspects of eternal life. With the recent heartbreaking and tragic suicides in the news, and the awareness that so many people are living in hidden pain every day, a wave of God’s compassion is rising up in believers -- for the purpose of sharing the good news of God’s love with people along with a fresh revelation of the availability of this eternal life (both quantitatively and qualitatively) that Jesus purchased for all us with His own blood. God loves everyone deeply and He went to the “nth” degree to show us that by sending His Son to save us from the enemy’s plan to “steal, kill and destroy” our lives (John 10:10).

How are you doing in this area? Do you have eternal life? Are you experiencing the qualitative dimension of eternal life that fills you with God’s love, joy and a deep peace which heals your internal emptiness, pain and brokenness? Do you know you have the quantitative aspect of eternal life that gives you the assurance that you will spend eternity with God in heaven, after you die? God wants all of this for YOU!

Let’s talk about the quantitative part of eternal life, the reality that because we’ve received Jesus as Lord, we will live forever! When talking about “forever”’s sometimes hard to grasp -- especially when our earthly life is measured in decades, not billions of decades. But it’s worth thinking about our forever destination...because, it IS a destination (and ultimately a decision) that we’ll live with for all of eternity.

Thankfully, Jesus did all of the heavy-lifting and He made a way for us to choose eternal life. When we surrender our hearts and choose to believe and receive Jesus as our Lord, we receive eternal life -- both the quantitative and qualitative aspects. Jesus never forces anyone to choose Him, but He does give us the opportunity to do so. Our answer to that opportunity changes everything.

>>When we say yes to Jesus, we receive eternal life -- quantitatively and qualitatively!

>>When we say no to Jesus, we do not receive eternal life -- neither quantitatively nor qualitatively.

1 John 5:11-12 explains this very clearly: “And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life” (NLT).

It’s not complicated, is it? No, not at all, but it is a choice and there is no better time than right now to choose Jesus and receive eternal life. Jesus died on the cross to bear the weight and penalty of our sins, and through His death and resurrection, He provided the pathway for each of us to be reconciled with God and spend eternity with Him in Heaven. When you invite Jesus to be the Lord of your life -- also know as: getting saved or being born again -- this decision determines your eternal destination. Are you ready to invite Jesus to be the Lord of your life and receive eternal life?

Living our lives just wishing or hoping that we have eternal life (apart from Christ) doesn’t heal the emptiness, brokenness and pain we experience in the qualitative parts of our life here on earth and it doesn’t give us any assurance of the quantitative experience of life everlasting after we leave Earth. That is no way to live, friends! God wants you to know for certain that you have eternal life -- here and now, and forever!

Let’s read 1 John 5:11-13 again but this time from the NKJV translation: “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.”

Are you ready to make TODAY your day of salvation and KNOW that you have eternal life? To ask Jesus Christ to be your Savior, pray a simple prayer like the one below and mean it in your heart -- and you’ll be saved!

Say This: “Father, I need You. I know that I am a sinner in need of a Savior. I now turn to You, Jesus. I believe that You died for me and were raised from the dead. I believe that You are the Lord, and I now confess You as my Lord. Thank You that I am now born again -- I'm saved! I now KNOW that I have eternal life, both here and forever! Thank you, Lord! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
