Want More Joy & Laughter?

Jennifer Cole

Here’s a sneak peek into the Up book, which is helping so many people move from feeling super discouraged in life to finding out how to live a life uplifted by joy and laughter!

Talk therapy is God’s idea. He’s given us one of the most incredible tools of joy, gladness and happiness - and it’s found just an inch or so below our noses! Our mouths carry power, and it’s vital that our words are congruent with our thoughts and in line with God’s Word.

Sometimes we feel like talking in a positive and uplifting way in agreement with God’s Word, and sometimes we don’t. If we want our Christian life to move off the emotional roller coaster, we need to say what God says - on purpose!

Craving some practical tips on how to do this easily and effectively as part of your daily life? Check out the Up book from the Life Basics series and in that book I’ll coach you on how to write a new chapter in your life - moving from a life of feeling bummed out to a life filled with joy and laughter!

Say This: “Father, thank you that joy and laughter are things you want for me to have in my daily life. I ask you to help me understand more about how I can tap into that joy and laughter! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

Check Your Chatter

Jennifer Cole

“Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.” 1 Timothy 1:19, NLT

Would you like to win the battles you face? Do you want to know how to avoid a shipwreck in your faith life?

All we need to do is what the Apostle Paul advised: “Cling to your faith in Christ. Keep your conscience clear.” Pretty simple, right?

Yet, sadly we all know people who were at one point on-fire for the Lord, studying for ministry, leading worship, teaching the Bible, living on the mission field, praying night and day, feeding the homeless, caring for the elderly, sharing the gospel everywhere they went, serving on a church staff, pioneering churches…and on it goes -- yet today their fire is dim. Their faith appears to be totally shipwrecked. What happened??

Several things could be the cause but today I want to look at one possible culprit -- words! 2 Timothy 2:16 NIV gives us this heads-up: “Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.” That verse is flashing lights and sounding an alarm...telling us “Warning-Warning! Trouble ahead!” Sometimes we think just some “little” ungodly chatter here and there is no big deal. But we gotta be super careful with our words -- as we all know, just a little rudder turns a whole ship -- and you don’t want to aim the ship of your life towards a shipwreck!

So how can each of us check our chatter? Think about how you talk in your relationships, on your Facebook or Twitter posts or just in your day-to-day living -- do you spend a lot of time talking about, listening to or reading godless nothings? Do you allow unethical and immoral things to be part of what you watch or listen to? Or, do your conversations regularly include talking about the Lord -- His love for you and others, His goodness, His faithfulness?

Here’s the truth of the matter -- people talk about the things that fill their hearts. So, if the Lord, His Word or His workings are not regularly coming out of your mouth -- that’s a shipwreck warning signal that your heart may be filling with other things besides the Lord. If that feels like it could be you in this season, just make a conscious decision to fill your life with things you read, watch and listen to that speak of the Lord’s goodness, His Word and His love for you. This will fill your heart with the Lord and then you can’t even help but start chattering to everyone about Him!! You can do this and I’m cheering you on!

Say This: “Father, I don’t ever want to shipwreck my faith. Please help me to clearly see if there is any ungodly chatter in my life that is pointing my ship in the wrong direction. Help me to instead fill my heart more and more with You and Your Word, so that my chatter can’t help but to bring glory and honor to You! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

Satisfaction

Jennifer Cole

“They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, and You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.” Psalm 36:8, NKJV

Where in this day-and-age can you look for and find true satisfaction? Try “Happy Hour!” No, not the Cheers “where everybody knows your name” Happy Hour…I’m talking about Church!

Any other version of Happy Hour doesn’t actually fix the issues in life and it doesn’t produce lasting happiness. So today I’m letting you in on a little secret...there is one Happy Hour that actually improves your life, gives you lasting joy and leads to a full, happy life! That’s why I look forward to Happy Hour every weekend -- it’s at Church, people!

God is using His Church to take people from a life of sin and depression, hurt and brokenness, rejection and loneliness, dissatisfaction and emptiness -- to life and joy, healing and wholeness, approval and friendship, satisfaction and fulfillment. It’s been said, “God loves us enough to reach us where we’re at, but He loves us too much to let us stay there!” It's true -- and He's using His Church to reach people and redefine Happy Hour!

Of course, we shouldn't be surprised -- this has been God’s plan all along, as we can see from Psalm 36:8. So today, I encourage you to get connected to His House -- a thriving, growing, loving local church -- and plug into Happy Hour every weekend!

Say This: “Father, I have tried to find satisfaction in what this world offers but I have not found a lasting Happy Hour anywhere. Today, I see that You have put Your blessing on Your House and I am going to find, reconnect or recommit to a local church. I will take off all my preconceived ideas or past experiences, and I will seek You to find out where You want me to be planted. Thank You for leading me to a lasting Happy Hour! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

Faith That Works

Jennifer Cole

“For in Christ, neither our most conscientious religion nor disregard of religion amounts to anything. What matters is something far more interior: faith expressed in love.” Galatians 5:6, The Message

Perhaps you’ve heard the phrase, “faith works by love!”

The idea being that if we want our faith to work, we need to walk in love toward God, toward others and even toward our enemies. In other words, we’ve been taught that if we want to activate our mountain-moving faith to receive something God promised, or use our faith for healing, boldness, strength, wisdom or other things -- we need to be sure we are walking in love if we want our faith to actually work! And, these principles are true. God does want us to walk in love. When we don’t walk in love or forgiveness towards others, it short-circuits the power or effectiveness of our faith. Our faith works when we walk in love!

But wait...there’s more! Are you ready for this? Today I want us to also see another application of this verse. This time, think about the principle that faith works by love -- but now let’s put the focus on His love! After all...when we know and believe in His love for us, we cease from trusting in our religious strivings. Our faith takes a turn and rests completely in Him. So, you could say that faith is best expressed when it comes from a place that is resting in His love.

Today let’s walk in love and forgiveness towards others -- and walk out our faith from a place of complete rest in His love of us! Then...your faith will work!

Say This: “Father, today I choose to walk in love towards others, and I also choose to rest in Your love. I see faith from a whole new angle today. My faith works by love -- I trust in Your love and I thank You that from that place my faith is working on every mountain standing in my way. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

Whodunit?

Jennifer Cole

“…the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”  Colossians 1:26-27, NIV

Ever read a good mystery novel, or watched an edge-of-your-seat mystery movie? Have you found yourself trying to put the pieces together to figure out “whodunit?” God has been writing a world-class mystery -- a redemptive mystery that the angels longed to solve and that the devil himself could not peer into. God’s mystery was hidden for thousands of years, until the fullness of times, when Jesus came to the earth He created. His visitation to Earth was a mystery. He preached a mighty storm. He performed miracles. He walked on water. He manifested the glory of God everywhere He went.

Then...the plot thickened when Jesus laid down His life on the cross as an act of His free will to become our substitute on the Cross. In that act of love, He legally became sin and took the full wrath of God for every one of our sins -- past, present and future -- and the entire curse that resulted from sin! To top it off, Jesus, on cue, went to hell on our behalf. Then, the great plot of God’s mystery reprised when hell started to shake, and the devil had a heart attack when Jesus Christ was raised from the dead!

And then...the Holy Spirit’s power was released and heaven went to work overcoming death with resurrection life! God’s mystery was in operation and He reversed the curse of sin, death, sickness, disease, poverty, lack and every form of sin and death that the devil had injected into the human race the day Adam and Eve fell. Seriously -- talk about the best mystery plot EVER!!

And it’s not just a great novel or movie...it’s real and it’s life-changing -- Christ in us is the mystery revealed! It is hope of glory! Today, let’s walk in the revelation of the mystery of God: Christ is in you!

Say This: “Father, I thank You for such a gift -- wow, Christ is in ME -- the hope of glory! What a profound mystery plot you carried out to perfection -- and it changed my eternity! Today, I rise up in the reality of this great mystery and I declare that Christ and all that He was and is, is living in me. I declare that His glory shall be seen in and through my life. The Lord my God is in the midst of me and His power is at work in my life -- today! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
