Today, I want to share with you some tips on how to load up with joy in your life, ongoing! Joy is not just some nice-sounding but irrelevant word -- it actually means a great deal to our lives...and according to the Bible, it means a lot to our health. In Proverbs 17:22 we see that “a cheerful disposition is good for your health; gloom and doom leave you bone-tired” (MSG).

In fact, for years medical science has been studying the effects of laughter and humor and their role in the health of our mind and body. Humor therapy is being used for the relief of physical or emotional pain and stress. Laughter is known to reduce muscle tension, increase cardio-respiratory function, and reduce stress. Many studies show the benefits of humor and laughter on various immune system outcomes. And, laughing brings in a tremendous amount of oxygen, which has profound positive effects in many ways for your body. The harder you laugh, the greater the effects!

I wonder if the Lord already knew all this. No wonder He told us through Paul to rejoice always! (1 Thess. 5:16) In fact, I want to introduce you to a side of God that we don’t often consider -- God laughs. Yes, that’s what the BIble says: God sits in heaven and laughs. He laughs at the futility of those who try to make Him irrelevant. (Psalm 2:4) And, the Bible also tells us that in His presence is fullness of joy! (Psalm 16:11) Jesus was anointed with the oil of gladness! (Hebrews 1:9)

>>We need the joy of the Lord -- it’s truly an essential hallmark of the Christian life.

Yet too many Christians are stressed and depressed or mad and sad. Let’s all become more Christ-like so we can live joy-filled lives! So, how do we load up on joy?...

Hang out with God! Because fullness of joy exists in His presence, it’s inevitable that when we hang out with and get close to God, His joy splashes over into our lives.

Shout for joy! When was the last time you shouted for joy? Shouted out your thanks and praise to God? I guarantee if you start shouting, you will also start laughing...and you will find the joy of the Lord to be your strength.

Laugh anyway! Sometimes we don’t feel like laughing. Friends, I encourage you -- laugh anyway! Laugh a lot. Laugh at yourself. If it’s been a while, you might be surprised at how refreshing it is to laugh.

Thank God! Come on -- why not try it -- be thankful! If you’ll just start thanking Him for your life, breath, family, health, blessings...the joy will come.

My basics friends -- you have so much to celebrate and be thankful for in life! C’mon get happy, life is too short to be serious all the time. Start shouting with joy, start thanking and start laughing --you’ll be so glad you did!

Say This: “Father, I thank You for these blessings in my life: _________ (name them!). I shout with joy for my blessings, I shout praises of thanksgiving to You! Lord, as I spend time with You, let Your joy flow over into my life. May my Christian life be one marked with laughter and joy! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

We are in a selfie culture, aren’t we? When we scroll through our Instagram and Facebook feeds, we see lots of selfies from friends, family, coworkers, inspirational people, fitness gurus and folks from all age groups. Now, I’ve got nothing against a great selfie...although you gotta get it from the right angle (who’s with me there?)!

But...the challenge for all of us in this selfie culture is to not let our photography trend bleed over into our everyday communications with others. If we’re constantly making ourselves the center of every conversation, or inserting our own stories over the ones others are trying to tell, then we’ve carried the selfie mindset into the broader scope of our lives...and that’s not going to help our relationships!

In Philippians, Paul made the observation of how much self focus, rather than others focus, was noticeable even in those times. We can read about it in Philippians 2:19-21: “But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your state. For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus” (NKJV).

>>So, what can you do to stand out in this selfie-obsessed culture? Here’s the secret…

Take a genuine interest in others! Dale Carnegie said it so well: “To be interesting, be interested.” Simple -- even basic, if you will -- but very profound! What does it look like to be interested? In practical terms, it shows up in things like being intentional to ask questions about others. Not just the surface-level “how are you” to which everyone just replies “good” or “fine” (or “crazy busy”), but asking questions that show you are genuinely wanting to learn about how they’re really doing, what they’re doing, what they like, and so on.

If you spend time honing this skill -- this critical people skill of being interested -- you will definitely start to see the positive impact this will have on your relationships in all areas of life. Plus, it’s just downright FUN! People are fascinating, everyone has a unique story and perspective. Getting to know lots of different people can add color to your own world. And, as you’re actively being interested in those around you, they’ll find YOU more interesting! People enjoy being known...everyone likes being noticed and cared about enough for someone to take interest in them. Be that someone!

Your people skills matter. The Lord has a divine purpose for you and for all of us, and for us to maximize our impact in this world for Him, it takes people skills! Friends, let’s each commit to growing in our people skills, now and throughout our whole lifetime, so we can help others in new and greater ways!

Say This: “Father, thank You that I can turn to You for help in any area of my life. Today, I pray that You would help me increase my people skills, now and throughout my life. I want to help others around me and help to build Your Church, and all of that involves people. Lord, help me to stay others-focused, and not self-focused, and to take a genuine interest in others. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

Fill Your Season With Joy

Jennifer Cole

“...Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!” Nehemiah 8:10, NLT

Feeling like you need a bit more strength and joy this holiday season? I have good news! The joy of the Lord is our today, I encourage you to turn on your favorite worship songs or maybe some of your fave Christmas tunes, to help amp up the JOY in your life!

Some of my faves at Christmastime are:

Silver Bells -- this song for me brings to mind great memories of family, Christmas shopping and excitement!

O Holy Night -- there’s nothing like looking at our manger set and hearing this song -- so moving!

Oh Come All Ye Faithful -- this song is pure worship, am I right?...oh come let us adore Him! I love it!

So crank up the tunes, sing along, dance, lift your hands, do whatever it takes to get that JOY of the Lord flowing into your life. You’ll be so glad you did!
Say This: “Father, thank You that the joy of the Lord is my strength. I ask for a fresh infusion of Your joy into my life today please, and show me the songs and other methods that will help me better tap into that joy each day! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

Can You Help A Sista Out?

Jennifer Cole

"If we have sown [the seed of] spiritual good among you, [is it too] much if we reap from your material benefits?" 1 Corinthians 9:11, AMPC

I never thought I'd need to use this verse, but here we are! :) Don't worry, I'm not asking for money or any of your material possessions! But, if you've been enjoying the spiritual seed in The Basics Daily Devo, can I ask you for a "material benefit" or favor today? My request is simple but will have a big impact! Today, would you "follow" us on social media?

I know. Social media can stir up feelings of a love/hate relationship for many of us. We love that we can connect with others -- even long-lost cousins and high school classmates. But, none of us like the negativity that can at times be all over social media.

Such as it is, social media is here to stay. I have finally accepted the fact that the role of social media has an increasing value in "street cred" (credibility) and influence as we grow our ministry. So, this is where you come in. If you do not already follow @thebasicswithbeth on Facebook or @bethjones on Instagram or Twitter -- would you consider following us?

Of course, we could fast-track our growth by "buying" followers -- as it turns out, many people do that. preferred way to grow a social media tribe is by posting content people WANT to consume -- such as encouraging posts, inspirational images, ministry updates, personal posts and funny stories, etc. -- and then asking friends to follow and spread the word.

So, that's what I am doing today...I am asking if you would help a sista out by following our accounts on social media! And would you tag a friend whom you think would enjoy our posts too?

Our goal in 2018 is to post great content. We'll do our best to post both inspiring, encouraging and personal things on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And, we'd love your engagement - hearing from you and knowing what God is doing to encourage you through our devo or social media posts really does encourage and motivate all of us at the BWB. When you give us your feedback, comment, share and engage with us it helps us to do a better job as we serve the Lord and bring you the basics through a variety of venues.

So, if you are willing to help a sista out -- today can you hit “follow” for The Basics With Beth at these handles:

Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate it!

New Podcast: How To Stick With It

Jennifer Cole

I’m so excited for you to hear from two pretty incredible ladies on the podcast today -- Pam Hart and Gina Cameneti! Pam and her husband Gary pastor Victory Church in Great Falls, Montana, and Gina and her husband Joe pastor Believers Church in Warren, Ohio. Both of these gals have decades of longevity and “stick-to-it-iveness” in ministry, marriage and raising kids!

Haven’t you found that people look at you strangely if you say you’ve been pastoring (or fill in your occupation) for 30 years, or been married a few decades -- all while raising up children to love the Lord? Why does that all seem so “out of the norm” in this day-and-age?

We tackle that very subject in this week’s brand new basic interview podcast! Pam and Gina dish out their secrets on how to “stay” in a culture that says “go,” how to have longevity in all areas of life -- and how to have fun and laugh along the way!

So -- check out The Basics With Beth new podcast today on iTunes or on our website  -- and then drop me a note on social media or email to let me know how it helped you!

P.S. We’d love for you to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes if you haven't done so yet. That way, you'll get notified every time we release a new episode and be ahead of the curve!
